Depending on the history of atheism consulted, the interested reader can come away either with the impression that contemporary atheism has a long lineage stretching back through the atheists of the French Enlightenment, the Paduan Averroists of the sixteenth century, the middle ages and back to antiquity; or that it appears surprisingly late in history, no earlier than the mid seventeenth century.

RE: First Modern Atheists ??....
A great American atheist that should be included in that list is Madalyn Murray O'Hair. She started the American Atheists and ended or at least helped end government sponsored prayer in public schools.

I wonder how many people in the last two thousand years would have claimed to be atheists if it wasn't so taboo (especially in the dark ages and other times where you could be murdered for such disbelief.)

Also, I know your post was only about modern atheists, but I wanted to point out that there have been atheists for as long as there have been theists. There were/are even whole tribes that have no religious beliefs or rituals.

My personal #1 reason that I don't like religion is because I like knowledge! And Religion suppresses knowledge; not just the knowledge unfortunately, but it suppresses the entire drive to understand.
